About

  • Hello! I’m an ultra-endurance cyclist named Chase. I hated my name as a kid, but as an adult, I learned to appreciate it for defining what made me tick: chasing big adventures by bike, foot, and packraft. Defined, past tense, I guess I should say. I won the National Ultra Endurance Series last year (100 mile women’s pro), and also went on some big adventures, and then things got really weird. I’ve heard from a lot of people that Covid amplified everything in their lives that they were already struggling with; this is no doubt what happened to me as well. I crashed so hard (in life, not on my bike) at the beginning of the stay at home order I kept telling myself “this is the bottom, it’s okay, you’ve got this” and then two more bottom layers I thought were sturdy gave way underneath me. I even missed out on the opportunity to join the rest of the country in mass sourdough bread baking!

  • This blog is my real-time memoir of making a come pack by practicing what I preach: a lifetime of telling myself, and everyone else around me, outdoor adventure is the best therapy. I used to say this with a swagger because I had degrees to back it up (in Adventure Education and Wilderness Leadership) as well as nearly a decade of guiding and outdoor education experience. I want that swagger back.
  • Like every good expedition planner, I know I need a clear objective and a map to get me there. So I have named the 800-mile Arizona Trail Race my dragon, and my map back to badassery includes the the waypoints (or, posts on the blog based on themes) listed below.

    • Self-Education – on Thursdays, I’ll take pieces of the self-improvement books I’ve been reading (holler, Brene Brown, Glennon Doyle, and the 50 others I’ve read recently), along with advice from friends, and apply what I’m learning to aspects of being an ultra endurance cyclist and adventure junkie.
Camp Chef Fridays – I really did stop cooking, and sometimes eating, for three months. On Fridays, I’m going to be finding inspiration for these things again by cooking outdoors & sharing tried and true recipes from former adventures.
Ask Chase on Monday – on Mondays, I will put on my hat as an expert in adventure, and my other hat as a professional ultra endurance athlete, while my youngster Millenial brother and his Gen Z buddies ask me for gear, adventure, and training advice.
Book & Podcast Reviews – I’ll share little summaries of the books and bikes I’m turning to for inspiration as I log some seriously long miles training for the AZT 800.
The rest of the days, I’ll post about my insane training plan. I’ll be crossing the Grand Canyon for the AZT 800 with my bike on my back, so a lot of my training is going to be adventuring, and I hope you will borrow ideas & inspiration from the multisport adventures I put together. I will also share updates on my fitness, including times I fall off the horse, and advice for anyone who is also working toward an endurance goal.
The alpine views kept me smiling on a long day of high elevation training up and over the notorious Blixt Pass in Telluride, CO.
